He abandoned an early career as a surveyor and engineer to study art in Paris and London, where he learnt his etching techniques under Frank Short. His artistic life before and after the World War I was centred around the Soho area of London, particularly the Dieppe restaurant in Dean Street. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHere he became involved with Aleister Crowley and also worked on illustrations for D.H. Lawrence's \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eApocalypse\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. He was a friend of Austin Osmond Spare and helped with his theories of automatic drawing. From 1922 he taught etching at Liverpool School of Art towards the end of the 1930's he abandoned printmaking for writing but continued to paint until the late 1950's. His work is in the collections of the BM and V\u0026amp;A. A retrospective exhibition was held at the 20th Century Gallery, Fulham, London, in 1998. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe engravings of Frederick Carter have always been considered to be the artist’s greatest works. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA great believer in the power of the subconscious, Frederick Carter experimented with automatic drawing between 1915 and 1924, along with fellow symbolist Austin Osman Spare. Born on April 12, 1881 in Lyons-en-Santerre. Maclet worked with his father as a gardener during his youth, and was taught the basics of painting by the local parish priest. Despite his father’s misgivings, Maclet moved to Paris in 1906 to pursue a career as an artist. Living in the neighborhood of Montmarte, he supported himself through odd jobs, including decorating props for the Moulin Rouge and painting dolls. Following World War I, Maclet received an increasing amount of recognition for his depictions of Paris, and in 1923, he earned the patronage of a wealthy Austrian manufacturer, Baron von Fray. Von Fray went on to fund he artist’s painting expeditions through the South of France in the years that followed. Maclet returned to Paris in 1932, where he continued to produce work despite suffering from mental illness. It contains hand and stencil-coloured graphics and fashion illustrations by the leading German artists of the day, alongside literary texts and cultural criticism. The journal also deals with spatial art and modern 20s lifestyle. Illustrated home stories and interior design. The aim of the publishing association was to develop a stylistically independent fashion centre in Germany and thus to become independent of the dominant Parisian Fashion houses. The luxuriously presented journal was not economically viable to produce and after the German currency reform of 1924, was discontinued.
