Traditionally held to be a portrait of Judith Wright 1757-1828 a wife of John Brome 1717-1783 of the Manor House, Bishops Stortford. However her life dates do not fit the timescale of the drawing. The sitter is more likely to be one of John Brome's two spouses Martha Osborne Brome M.1739. D.1759. or Mary Saxton Brome B.1726. 42 by 55 cms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA charming early work by Cotes, the leading pastellist of his day and founder member of The Royal Academy. Born in London he was the elder brother of Samuel Cotes the noted miniaturist. He studied Portrait painting under George Knapton before establishing his own practice. Heavily influenced by the pastel drawings of Rosalba Carriera he concentrated on works in pastel and crayon becoming one of the most fashionable portratists of his day. He helped found the Society of Artists of Great Britain becoming its Director in 1765.
