Louis-François Roubiliac 1702-1762. Pencil drawing. Circa 1759. Study for a portrait bust of King Charles The First. Inscribed to the reverse: this Busto was Carved by L.F. Roubiliac for Sellyn Esq. at Matson in Gloucestershire. Drawn on early 18th.Century laid paper. 15 by 20 cms. Probably a study for the bust now in the British Museum. (BM 1762,0528.6). Sellyn, refers to George Augustus Selwyn 1719-1791 MP for Gloucester who commissioned the work from Roubiliac. The Seat of the Selwyn family Matson House was used as the headquarters for Charles The First during the Seige of Gloucester in 1643.
