He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1782 and left for Italy in 1786 to study the Italian Old Masters. On his return in 1792 he began to exhibit frequently at the Royal Academy, being elected a full member in 1807. He specialised in portraits, scenes of Italian life, historical and literary subjects.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis study depicts the dramatic story of Virgil reading the Aeneid to the Roman Emperor Augustus and his sister Octavia.
