Alessio Gemignani 1567-1651 Italian School 17th.Century Pen Ink and brown wash drawing. A design for a lunette depicting the consecration of the eucharist. Executed on laid paper trimmed to lunette, some soft creasing and skinning to reverse, to no real detriment. 19.5 by 13.5 cms.

Gemignani produced a number of designs for decorative lunettes throughout his career. Comparable examples are in the Collection of the Morgan Library & Museum New York (2020.117,IV,27e).

At the consecration of the eucharist the priest places the bread and wine on the altar and, through prayers, consecrates them, transforming them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This transformation is central to the sacrament of the Eucharist.
