
Alexandre Charpentier 1856-1909. French School 19th.Century. A very rare group of three cast bronze art nouveau plaques circa.1890. Each individually cast in shallow relief depicting the head and shoulders of a young woman singing, playing chess and the violin. Cast with artist's monogram and signature. Set into their original oak stands with scroll motifs (these also designed by Charpentier).14.3 x 7.7 cms. 26 x 8.2 cms on stand. Some slight wear to patina on violinist and chess player to no real detriment. Provenance: Private collection UK.
Charpentier was a French sculptor, medalist, designer, craftsman, and cabinet-maker. A leading figure in the French Art Nouveau Movement.
Originally the studio assistant of the medallist Hubert Ponscarme, Charpentier was the leading force behind the resurgence of the traditional art of French medal design in the late 19th.Century. He also designed and created complete interiors from the light fittings to the door furniture. Several of Charpentier's works are part of the Musée d'Orsay collection.
