Alfred Reginald Thomson was born in Bangalore, India. Deaf from birth he studied at the London Art School in Kensington and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1920. He was an Official War Artist with the Royal Air Force and elected RA in 1945. He became a highly respected Society Portraitist in the 1948 Olympics he became the last person to win a gold medal for painting. The Tate Gallery, Imperial War Museum, Arts Council Collection hold examples of his work.
