George Henry Harlow 1787-1819 British School early 19th.Century. Portrait of Lady Frances Hamilton 1795-1860. Chalk and pencil drawing after the portrait composition by Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A. dateable to Circa.1804. 53.3 by 31.8cm. Provenance: Ex.Cyril and Shirley Fry Collection. An unusually large format portrait study by Harlow, whose work is all too often mis-catalogued as that of his Master Sir Thomas Lawrence. In 1802 at the suggestion of Georgiana Dutchess of Devonshire, Harlow paid Lawrence handsomely for admission to his studio and the right to copy, according to the contract he was not entitled to tuition. An exquisite draughtsman and portraitist he died tragically young aged 32.
Lady Frances Hamilton was the fourth daughter of John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn, and the only child of his second marriage to his cousin. She married William Howard, Lord Clonmore, later 4th Earl of Wicklow, in 1816.
