Previously attributed to John Martin under the title "The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah." The painting actually depicts the Great Fire of Edinburgh which took place over three days in mid November 1824, when a catastrophic blaze swept through the city's Old Town. The present drawing appears to be a preparatory study for the finished oil painting of the subject in the collection of The Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. Long credited directly to John Martin but more likely to be by a follower.
