Metz was born at Bonn, the son of the painter Johann Metz, he moved to London in 1781 to study at the Royal Academy Schools where he became a protégé of the celebrated engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. It was under his tutelage that Metz became a highly proficient and successful engraver of classical and religious subjects, eventually moving to Rome.
