Francesco Bartolozzi R.A. 1727-1815. Anglo-Italian School 18th.Century. Red and black chalk drawing on laid paper. A charming study of a sleeping infant. Circa.1776. Oval 17 by 20.5 cms image. 23 by 26.5 cms overall in period gilt frame. (Frame has some losses as to be expected, to no real detriment). Inscribed to the backing: "Augusta d.of William Locke of Norbury m.1815 Admiral Sir George Martin K.C.B, G.C.H. drawn by Bartolozzi. Lady Martin was Great Aunt to Admiral Charles J Rowley" 

Provenance: William Locke (1732-1810) the noted amateur artist, connoisseur and collector. He purchased an estate at Norbury near Mickleham, Surrey in 1774. Employing Cipriani, Barret and Bartolozzi in its decoration. The birth of his daughter Augusta depicted sleeping here in this intimate little study, ties in with Bartolozzi's time working for Locke at Norbury.

Mary Augusta (Locke) Martin 1775-1842 born at Norbury Park the daughter of William Locke and Frederica Augusta (Schaub) Locke 1750-1832, (The celebrated "Bluestocking" friend of Mme's D'Arblay and De Stael). Augusta was a sister to William Locke The Younger (An artist and noted protégé of Fuseli) and Amelia (Locke) Angerstein. She married 29 May 1815 Admiral of the Fleet Sir George Martin at fashionable St George's Hanover Square.
