The son of Henry Robert Morland (painter, engraver and Art Dealer) at only ten years old George Morland exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy. Initially employed by his father to produce copies of old masters, (which were passed off as originals), he was offered an apprenticeship by George Romney which he turned down in favour of a place at the Royal Academy Schools, his attendance there was sporadic as he preferred to attend the local alehouses instead. Despite his wayward lifestyle, often imprisoned for debt, he enjoyed a very sucessful career as a painter and practitioner of the animalier style. Specialising in depictions of animals, rural life and landscapes.
