George Romney 1723-1802. 18th.Century British School. Pencil drawing on laid paper. A large sheet of figure studies with a further compositional study to the reverse. 41.9 by 27.7 cms.
A study characterised by highly expressive, fluid lines that capture dynamic movement. Romney, although primarily known as a society portrait painter, would often use these quick preparatory sketches to explore dramatic themes from literature, theatre and mythology. They appear strikingly modern today.
