Attr. Jacques Charlier 1705-1790. French School 18th.Century. Watercolour on natural wafer laid on to card. A Classical scene with a couple in a landscape, she holds an arrow while he grasps her waist. Possibly The Abduction of Helen by Paris. 12 by 17 cms. Dateable to Circa.1750.
One of the foremost miniaturists of his time in 1753 Charlier was appointed "Peintre en Miniature du Roi" little is known of his early career but as he made many miniature copies after Boucher, it has been assumed that he studied under him. His patrons included the King, Madame du Pompadour, the Comte de Caylus, the Duc d'Aumont, the Prince de Conti and the Duc d'Orleans. He also received many commissions for the "Menus-Plaisirs du Roi" He seldom signed his work which makes any definite attribution difficult.
