James Ferguson was born the son of a Banffshire farmer, he taught himself astronomy becoming one of the most respected astronomers of his day, being self taught and of limited means he had to support himself by various endeavours, one of which was to create portrait miniatures, for which he charged ten shillings. The majority of his sitters were citizens of Edinburgh.
