John Cleveley The Younger 1747-1786 British School 18th.Century. Watercolour drawing Circa.1770. Sailing Vessels in an open sea. 15 by 11 cms image. 36.2 by 31.2 cms framed overall.

From a family of Maritime artists, Cleveley trained under Paul Sandby at The Royal Dockyards at Deptford, Woolwich and Chatham. He was employed as Joseph Banks' draughtsman on his journey to the Hebrides, The Orkney's and Iceland. He was also employed to turn the drawings made on Captain Cooks voyages into highly popular engravings. He is known for showing a more atmospheric style in his work, more reminiscent of the Dutch Golden Age artists of the 17th.Century.
