Attr. John Dixon Ca.1740-1811. 18th.Century Anglo-Irish School Pastel Portrait of a seated gentleman presented in a near contemporary gilt moulded neoclassical oval frame. Inscribed to reverse in a later hand Francis Seymour-Conway 1st.Marquess of Hertford. 41 by 49.5 cms overall in frame.

Known primarily as a Mezzotint artist, Dixon trained at the Dublin Society School. Moving to London Ca.1765. He became a director of the Free Society in 1773, giving up art in 1775, following a very advantageous marriage. Walpole described his last exhibit, the 1st Duke of Leinster as "a masterpiece of Art which has never been excelled."
