John Nixon 1759-1818. English School 18th.Century, pencil & grey wash watercolour drawing inscribed lower left "Race Ground, Brighton" A series of sketches on one sheet, depicting figures, horses and carriages. Provenance: The French Hospital of La Providence, with Spink & Son, King Street, St. James's, London, SW1 Summer Exhibition 1978.

John Nixon was an amateur artist best known for his humorous sketches. He was a wealthy merchant, and recorded the characters and streetscapes he encountered on his travels. He is recorded as being in Brighton in 1784 and again in 1804.
