John Nixon 1759-1818. English School 18th.Century, pen & grey wash watercolour drawing inscribed: "Maids of Honour at Drury Lane Theatre, Miss Tryon." Initialled and dated 1783. 10.6 by 15.5 cms image. 27.5 by 34.5 cms framed overall. 

John Nixon was an amateur artist best known for his humorous sketches. He was a wealthy merchant, and recorded the characters and streetscapes he encountered on his travels. Miss Tryon is recorded as being appointed as a Maid of Honour to Queen Charlotte in August 1761 at a salary of £300 a year.
