After relinquishing a sucessful career in advertising the self taught Vaughan set out to work as an Artist full-time. He became known for exploring the nude form within it's landscape or interior setting. His unique style blended figurative art with abstract elements. Vaughan formed friendships with the painters Graham Sutherland, Prunella Clough and John Minton with whom he shared premises, each artist having an influence on the other. Through these contacts he formed part of the Neo-Romantic circle of the immediate post-war period. Vaughan rapidly developed his own idiosyncratic style which moved him away from the Neo-Romantic, concentrating on studies of male figures, his works became increasingly abstract.
Sebastian Walker 1942–1991. Was a noted children's book publisher and a significant collector of 20th-century British art. He owned several important pieces by Keith Vaughan. He purchased Vaughan’s private sketchbooks and various major paintings directly from his estate.
