Born in Paris, Charlet studied under Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835). He visited London in 1820 with his fellow artist and friend Jean-Louis Andre Theodore Géricault (1791-1824). Both being pioneers alongside Delacroix of the Romantic movement. He exhibited at the Salon from 1836 onwards. He is known chiefly for his Military and Social Subjects, he was a prolific printmaker.
