Design for the 1942 Sadler's Wells Ballet production of Comus at the New Theatre, the role of the water nymph Sabrina was danced by Margaret Dale.1922-2010. The sets and costumes designed by Messel, the ballet was choreographed by Robert Helpmann (who also starred as Comus) and featured Margot Fonteyn as The Lady.
Oliver Messel was the foremost British stage and costume designer of the 1930s, 40's and 50's. His often unconventional and opulent designs for the, ballet, theatre and opera, made him the most sought after and highly paid theatrical designer of his generation.
