A highly significant painter of landscapes and seascapes, Steer was the predominant figure in the Impressionist movement in Britain in the late 19th Century. His work clearly showing the impact of both Turner and Constable. As a long term Professor of painting at the Slade School of Art he influenced generations of young artists.
