Provenance: inscription to the reverse reads, a gift from Lady Glenconner to R Ross. (Pamela Tennant, Baroness Glenconner 1871-1928, prominent member of "The Souls" to Robbie Ross, 1869-1918 the journalist, art critic and art dealer, best known for his relationship with Oscar Wilde).
Cosway was the leading miniature painter of the Georgian and Regency era, a contemporary of John Smart, George Engleheart, William Wood, and Richard Crosse. His wife was the Italian-born painter Maria Cosway, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson.
