Robert Smirke, R.A. 1752-1845. British School Pencil drawing Circa.1800. Study of a young woman leaning on a harp. 12.5 by 15.5 cms image. 16.5 by 19.5 cms overall framed. Provenance: Christies 18/07/2012. Lot 785. 

Smirke first trained as a coach painter before joining the Royal Academy Schools in 1772. He exhibited literary and historical paintings as well as producing illustrations. He was elected A.R.A. in 1792 and a full Academician in 1793. Although the Academy elected Smirke as Keeper in 1804, George III vetoed the appointment on account of the artist's radical politics.
