A fine art nouveau alabaster sculpture in non finito style dateable to the late 19th century, attributable to the Italian sculptor A. Gennai. A portrait of the Poetess Sappho. 38.5 cms high. 34.5 cms wide. 13.5 cms deep. Some minor edge chipping and paint loss to wreath to no detriment.
Sappho born Ca.615 B.C. on the Island of Lesbos was greatly revered as a poetess, her poetry focuses on the personification of love, affection, and creativity. Her rythmic style was often performed accompanied by music and dance, giving her the reputation for being the Divine Inspiration to the Muses.
