William Sextie 1821-1887. Watercolour drawing. Equestrian portrait of 'Saucebox' Winner of the Doncaster St.Leger in 1855. Owned and trained by Tom Parr and ridden by John Wells. Saucebox was a bay colt by St.Lawrence out of Priscilla Tomboy and was the 80th. Winner of the St.Leger. The prize value to the winner at the time was £2,710 (equivalent to @£300,000 today). This painting was used as the basis for the aquatint engraving published by Ackermann in 1857. The artist William Sextie had by 1860 become himself a noted trainer of racehorses.  52 by 38.5 cms. 64 by 51 cms overall in carved giltwood frame.
