Sir David Wilkie R.A. 1785-1841. Early 19th.Century Scottish School. Pen and ink drawing a study for an unidentified composition, possibly Falstaff. Circa. 1815. 17.5 by 10.5 cms to mounted image.

Enormously successful from an early age Wilkie is perhaps best known for his genre paintings. He painted a wide variety of subject matter including historical scenes, portraits and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter".
