Sand was the elder child and only son of George Sand the French novelist and feminist. He studied art under Eugène Delacroix and was also a prolific writer and entomologist. In addition to his numerous novels, he is best remembered for his monumental study of the commedia del Arte– Masques et bouffons (comédie italienne), 1860. For which this drawing may be a preparatory study.
